What is a card pre-authorisation?

A card pre-authorisation is a temporary hold placed on part of your available credit limit before the final transaction amount is confirmed.

💳 Pre-authorisations are commonly used by:

  • Hotels

  • Car rental companies

  • Fuel stations

  • Subscription services

  • Merchants requiring a security deposit

The pre-authorised amount may be higher than the final transaction amount.

While the pre-authorisation is active:

  • Your available limit is reduced

  • The transaction may appear as pending

  • The final amount may change before settlement

Once the merchant completes the transaction or releases the hold, your available limit is updated automatically.
